About the counts
Words
Words are counted as groups separated by whitespace. Hyphenated terms count as one word. Languages without spaces between words need a different counting method.
Characters & lines
Characters include spaces and line breaks. The separate count excludes all whitespace. Unicode code points are counted individually, so a combined emoji can contribute more than one character.
Plain text
Text files are read as UTF-8. Case conversion changes letters, not document formatting. Title case capitalizes word starts; it does not apply a specific editorial style guide.
